  • PROFILE

Xavier Salvatella is a Group Leader at the Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine - IRB Barcelona. He holds a degree in Chemistry from the Universities of Barcelona (Bsc, PhD) and London (MSc) and has worked with Michele Vendruscolo and Christopher Dobson at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Cambridge, where he has been a Research Fellow. He was elected as a Research Fellow at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge and was awarded an ICREA Researcher position. Xavier’s general research interests lie at the interface between Chemistry and Biology and have focused in the recent past on understanding how the structure and dynamics of biomacromolecules relate to disease. • RESEARCH
    INTERESTS

In the last few years I have focused my interest in studying how proteins lacking a well-defined three-dimensional structure, known as intrinsically disordered proteins, perform their functions. More specifically, my laboratory has sought to understand how the sequences of this class of proteins encode specific functions, how these are affected by mutations and under which circumstances it may be possible to inhibit them with drug-like small molecules. Our laboratory is multidisciplinary and combines biophysics with cell/chemical biology as well as with theory/simulations, often in collaboration.
