Dr. Isidro Ferrer Abizanda is a Spanish neuropathologist and professor of Pathological Anatomy at the Department of Pathology and Experimental Therapeutics of the University of Barcelona (1990-2022) in Spain. He was Director of the Institute of Neuropathology and Brain Bank at the Bellvitge University Hospital, Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona from 1996, and coordinator of the area of Neuropathology at the Biomedical Research Institute of Bellvitge (IDIBELL), Hospitalet de Llobregat until he retired from the hospital in 2016; member of the Institute of Neurosciences at the University of Barcelona; and research leader of the area of Neuropathology in the domain of Alzheimer's disease and dementias at the Center for Biomedical Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases Network (CIBERNED). He has published over one thousand articles in the world's premier neuroscience journals, book chapters in the series Handbook of Neurology, and editions of Greenfields's Neuropathology. Dr. Ferrer’s research interests include brain aging, molecular Neuropathology, and nervous system diseases associated with aberrant protein aggregates. He has identified novel alterations in metabolic pathways, clusters, and hubs in the aging nervous system and early stages of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Dementia with Lewy bodies, tauopathies, frontotemporal lobar dementia, prion diseases, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Ferrer has studied normal and abnormal development of the central nervous system, metabolic and degenerative diseases in childhood and adolescence, vascular, infectious, and degenerative diseases of the central nervous system, muscular diseases, and diseases of the peripheral nervous system.
