HIGHLIGHTS OF
THE PROJECTFunctional communication is one of the most important predictors of social reintegration after a stroke. However, approximately 15-42 % of stroke survivors experience poststroke aphasia. Aphasia is a language disorder that affects speech production and understanding, reading and writing. Hence, aphasia is associated with long-term disability, drastically reducing the quality of life. Helping people recover from aphasia has been identified as one of the top 10 research priorities after stroke. Our aim is to contribute to increase patient’s quality of life developing a therapy based on dubbing scenes from a popular TV series. Dubbing is stimulating and it comprises most components of speech. From the very beginning of the project we have included the voice of the people with aphasia in our project, including the clinical trial design, the words to be dubbed in the proposed therapy and joint collaboration in the work package focused on dissemination, social engagement and knowledge transfer.

RESEARCH
INTERESTSMy main research interests are in the field of stroke from a translational approach: the development of new therapies in acute stroke (reperfusion and brain repair, including stem cell therapy), the influence of diabetes and post-stroke hyperglycaemia on the ischemia-reperfusion brain damage, how to ensure access and equity in acute stroke care, stroke prevention, and how to improve the management of post-stroke complications (mainly aphasia).
