  • PROFILE

Almudena R Ramiro graduated in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Universidad Autónima de Madrid in 1994 and obtained her Doctor of Science degree and Extraordinary Prize for Doctoral Thesis in 2000. In 2001 Ramiro joined the laboratory of Dr. Michel Nussenzweig at the Rockefeller University (New York, USA), where he did his postdoctoral work.

In 2006 Ramiro joined the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO) as Junior Group Leader, where he studied different aspects of germinal center B lymphocytes. Since 2011, he has led the B Lymphocyte Biology laboratory at the National Center for Cardiovascular Research.

Ramiro obtained a Ramón y Cajal contract in 2004 and a position as Senior Scientist at the CSIC in 2007.

    INTERESTS

Her lab is interested in various aspects of B cell biology, in particular the regulatory and diversification events that take place in germinal centers. Diversification in germinal centers entails the remodeling of immunoglobulin genes through two mechanisms called somatic hypermutation (SHM) and class switch recombination (CSR) that allow the generation of long-lived memory B cells and effector plasma cells. Thus, these germinal center events are responsible for improving the affinity and the memory immune response and underlie most of the vaccination strategies used worldwide.
