HIGHLIGHTS OF
THE PROJECTThe project involves a systems medicine approach to identify novel disease mechanisms, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets for personalized medical interventions in patients at-risk of fungal infection. We have identified interindividual genetic variation that modulates fungal-sensing transcriptional responses and that controls the efficiency of anti-fungal immunity. The role of these genetic variants during fungal infection is currently being profiled in advanced lung-on-a-chip model systems and a clinical study is being developed to identify their association with fungal disease. We expect these results to contribute significantly to clinical practice in pulmonary medicine by opening new horizons and laying the foundations for personalized approaches based on individual patient profiles.

PROFILE
Dr. Carvalho is a Principal Investigator of the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) of the School of Medicine of the University of Minho. He joined the ICVS in 2014 after becoming an Assistant Researcher (FCT Investigator). He previously was an Assistant Researcher at the Department of Experimental Medicine of the University of Perugia, Italy, and completed postdoctoral studies on the genetic basis of susceptibility to fungal infection at the ICVS, and the University of Perugia.

RESEARCH
INTERESTSDissection of the regulatory effects of interindividual genetic variation on molecular and cellular processes of immunity, and the identification of novel prognostic, diagnostic and therapeutic targets for the development of personalised medical interventions in patients at-risk of fungal infection. These aims are being addressed by a multidisciplinary team that combines basic scientists and clinical experts, and that resorts to advanced cellular and animal models of disease and human patients enrolled in national and international consortia.
