Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) are a huge problem for healthcare systems worldwide, and cause 25,000 deaths per year in Europe alone. The leading cause of HAI is contaminated medical devices, most commonly catheters.

These infections lead to complications with high patient morbidity and mortality, and very high medical costs. Current treatments are ineffective in preventing infection and, furthermore, contribute to development of bacterial resistance, a huge threat to public health.

SmartCap is a reusable, integrated catheter cap with a light-activated sterilization rod that extends into the catheter hub, stopping any bacterial infection without inducing microbial resistance. With this project, the researchers aim to optimize SmartCap technology and bring it closer to the market.
