  • DESCRIPTION

People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at high risk of developing chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, an allergic reaction to the fungus aspergillus, which is found in the air we breathe. Healthy people are not affected, but the population with previous pathologies is at risk.

In Spain, 4,000 new cases of chronic pulmonar aspergillosis, a disease with devastating consequences for the lungs, are diagnosed each year. The reduction in quality of life and mortality is very high.

The project investigates, through genetic sequencing techniques, the pathogenic mechanisms of the disease and the change in the response of the immune system to this infection.

The aim is to identify new biomarkers that indicate susceptibility to this infection in patients with previous lung diseases to improve prevention and diagnosis, and the design of personalized therapies.
