  • DESCRIPTION

Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of mortality around the world. Several factors, such as immune response, cause changes in the arteries and blood cells that remodel the vascular system in a pathological way.

This remodeling is the result of two of the most common cardiovascular diseases: atherosclerosis and abdominal aortic aneurysm. In the first, the arterial walls are obstructed and in the second they are dilated. In spite of the differences, in both cases there is a risk of an acute cardiovascular accident. However, the ultimate causes of these changes are unknown and the current biomarkers are insufficient to prevent these events.

This project seeks to understand how the immune response mediated by antibodies contributes to pathological vascular remodeling. The goal is to identify new biomarkers to prevent cardiovascular accidents and to find new therapies for these types of diseases.
