DESCRIPTION
Severe jawbone loss can make it very difficult to restore oral function with conventional dental implants, leaving patients with difficulties eating, speaking and socialising. These problems can affect nutrition, confidence and quality of life. This project aims to evaluate a digitally planned rehabilitation strategy for people with severe jaw atrophy, especially when no other fixed solution is feasible.
The approach combines digital planning, surgery and fixed tooth replacement with specially designed implants. A multidisciplinary team will evaluate real-world outcomes in patients who have already received this treatment through a standardised care pathway. They will assess effectiveness, safety, complications, the need for further procedures, oral function and patient-reported quality of life.
The project could generate robust evidence to inform clinical decision-making and the development of more inclusive, scalable rehabilitation pathways. Its findings may be particularly valuable for vulnerable patients with complex oral health needs, including older people and those previously treated for head and neck cancer, for whom restoring oral function is essential.
