The CaixaResearch Validate Call contributes to transfer the results of research to society and the market, and encourages the creation of new products and companies related to life and health sciences. Provides support to early stage biomedical research projects (TRL 1-4) to help them validate their asset and define their valorisation plan.

  • GOALS

    We help your bio-health project progress by providing you with high-value resources. We offer:

    • Financial support to develop a valorisation plan and a roadmap for your innovative asset: we offer up to €100,000 to create and implement a valorisation and commercialisation plan aimed at making use of protected or protectable assets resulting from research.

    • Mentors and experts to monitor and support your project: industry experts, consultants and entrepreneurs to help you define the best valorisation and commercialisation plans, whilst providing constant feedback for the project. All the projects selected will be assigned a mentor, a person responsible for advising on drawing up the Valorisation and business Plans and throughout the course of the programme in order to actively montitor the projects and guide its evolution.

    • Specialised Training in key areas: project management, tech transfer, assessment, finance and commercialisation tools, negotiations. The training provides participants with the tools they need to improve valorisation and commercialisation plans.

  • APPLICANTS

    Is your project a potential candidate? Please review the following requirements:

    For the Projects:
    - Projects must be aimed at the valorisation and commercialization of protected or protectable Assets resulting from research.
    - Projects must be related to the areas of Life, Medical and Health Sciences.
    - Projects may or may not have a patent or utility model pending. If this is not the case, the protection of the asset must be included in the valorisation plan and budget.

    For the Beneficiary of a Valorisation Grant:
    - They must be non-profit legal entities.
    - Type of entity: Universities, university foundations, research and transfer centres, technology centres, hospitals, hospital foundations and non-profit institutions whose main activity is research.
    - They must be the owner or co-owner of the protected or protectable Assets resulting from the research and subject of the Valorisation Plan.
    - One same Beneficiary may complete more than one application provided that they are associated to different protected or protectable Assets resulting from different research projects.
    - Established companies are explicitly excluded.

    For the Project Leaders:
    - Project leaders must be legal person with tertiary qualifications (university graduate, professor or doctor).
    - Their exclusive or main dedication to the validation Project, according to the Promoters criteria, for the business idea or transfer to market is required. Project Leader may not be involved in more than one application.
    - The Project Leaders may or may not be the leader of the research project that generated the Assets.
    - The project leader must be connected to the Beneficiary and he/she will require the agreement of the Beneficiary to be able to submit the application.

    We strongly recommend carefully reading the following documents before submitting your proposal.

  • SPECIALISED TRAINING

    Once your project will be selected you will have to participate in the Specialised Training: four weeks to improve your project and valorisation plan.

    Product development week

    The value of an early stage project; Investment process: from negotiating, to closing a deal; Meet relevant investors in the health and life sciences sector and obtain their feedback; Pitch day.

  • APPLICATION PROCESS

    1. Hand in your application and additional documents at the private area, in which you can apply for any call from ”la Caixa” Foundation. You should register if it is the first time you enter this platform. After registering, you will receive a nickname and a password to sign in.

    2. Once registered, please select the corresponding call and fill in the application form. Please download the User Manual) to know how to accredit your institution and to fill in your project information in the platform.

    3. Fill in the form on-line. Please download the CaixaResearch Validate Form 2022. This form has only informative purposes. All applications should be sent on-line through the platform.

    4. Remember that the application should be filled in English. We will not accept applications in any other language, incompletes, in a hard copy, or sent in any other way different from the platform.

  • SELECTION PROCESS

    Once the application period has ended, we will review your project to confirm that it complies with the rules for participation. Our selection process is based on the standards of the European Science Foundation in the European Peer Review Guide: Integrating Policies and Practices into Coherent Procedures, and is governed by the peer review assessment process.

    The European Peer Review Guide establishes that transparency is one of the fundamental principles of best practice in peer review of projects. Accordingly, before the process of application evaluation begins, the ”la Caixa” Foundation will make available to interested parties the rules and procedures that govern the programme.

  • SELECTION CRITERIA

    When evaluating projects, we will consider aspects such as the project’s market potential as well as its potential financial and social impact. Specifically, we will rate:

    Quality of Science and the Asset (up to 25 points out of 100)

    • Scientific feasibility.

    • Intellectual Property Protection.

    • Level of development.

    Transfer & Implementation capacity (up to 24 points out of 100)

    • Profile of the project leader and expertise.

    • Motivation and commitment of the project leader.

    • Existence of a support team complementary of the members.

    Valorisation project (up to 15 points out of 100)

    • Definition of objectives.

    • Correct identification, structure and focus of the actions to be carried out in the valorisation proposal, cost dimensioning and schedule.

    Market potential (up to 24 points out of 100)

    • Identification of the need or problem to be solved.

    • Value proposition.

    • Identification of the potential user, client or market.

    Social impact and responsible innovation (up to 12 points out of 100)

    • Social relevance and benefits for society of the asset and level of contribution to improving quality of life of citizens, social progress and human development.

    • Responsible innovation process. Research and innovation cover wide social needs. Existence of mechanisms of participation and involvement of the different social stakeholders.
